Entity identifiers: who issues them and how to look them up

This directory lists identifiers used to pin down an organisation in official records. Each row gives the issuer, the format where the issuer states it, and the official way to check a number. Blank cells mean the page read did not state the fact. The LEI, for example, is a 20-character code under ISO 17442 1, and the EU VIES service confirms a VAT number without giving out the trader's name or address 9.

Notes

  • The LEI is the only identifier here built for use across borders. ISO 17442-1:2020 covers legal entities, government bodies, supranationals and individuals acting in a business capacity, and excludes other natural persons 17.
  • A tax number such as the EIN is not a public register entry. The IRS says EINs are not intended for other activities such as state tax lien auctions, sales or lotteries 6.
